Bangladesh Protests Update: Impact of Nationwide Shutdown and Curfew on Logistics and Transportation

Further to our previous notice, Bangladesh experienced a nationwide "complete shutdown" from July 18th-23rd, impacting all aspects of logistics and transportation. A nationwide curfew has been imposed from July 19th and onwards, until the situation is fully under control, prohibiting all activities except emergencies.

This shutdown has impacted the following local import and export related activities:

Internet & Communication

Broadband internet connections are being restored on a limited scale as of today, July 24th. The area-based partial restoration will be on a trial basis, with priorities given to banking, commercial, technology, exports and media outlets.

Inland Transportation

Dhaka-Chattogram route/intercity & intra-city: There was no commercial transportation movement between July 19th-23rd. Service resumes slowly on July 24th.

Warehouse/Inland Container Depot/Depot/Consolidation

Truck delivery: There were extremely limited truck movements due to safety issues and the curfew. Transfers have slowly resumed.

Container freight station/warehouses: Receiving and stuffing operations have resumed. Delays are expected.

Customs Processing

Customs processing for import and export cargo has been greatly impacted due to the internet shut down. Manual processing was allowed but limited. Customs processing has now resumed.

Ocean/Sea Port & Terminal Activities

Port operations, including vessel berthing, container discharge, were limited. Heavy port congestion is expected after the complete shutdown. There will be delays in vessel berthing and sailings.

Airport Activities

Many flights were cancelled during the shutdown. Cargo operations have slowly resumed.

Freight Train Activities

Freight trains were inactive during the shutdown period. They may resume on July 24th.

The countrywide shutdown has heavily impacted Bangladesh and we expect it will take several weeks to restore normality.
