Congestion at the Port of New York and New Jersey
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recently published a statement as to the current congestion experienced. The following factors have contributed to the equipment shortages and empty container return inefficiencies being experienced, especially by truckers, at the Port of New York and New Jersey.
The Port of NY and NJ states “The current process of returning empties in the Port of New York & New Jersey is untenable. On a daily basis, Port Department Staff receive endless calls and emails from frustrated shippers and truckers who are unable to return empty containers. This has dramatically increased the number of single moves in the Port, which negatively impacts our efforts to improve both our operational efficiency and meet our sustainability goals.” Furthermore, they stated, “The practice of discharging import containers at multiple terminals and only accepting empty returns at one location does not make mathematical sense and negatively impacts the entire gateway.”
Additionally, APM Terminals in New Jersey advised that unforeseen complications, such as system issues, vessel bunching from the Red Sea situation and unexpected volume surges due to cargo diversions and front-loading, have impacted their service. To help alleviate these challenges, APM Terminals extended their gate hours to 7pm and optimized dual gate opportunities on August 12th. This will increase daily appointments for empty, import and export cargo.
