Exports and Production Increase in Automotive Industry

blog | Jan 02, 2023

Since the beginning of 2020, the production and sale of vehicles has decreased considerably due to some challenges that the industry has been facing. However, according to statistics released by Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), both in December 2023 and in 2022, the exports and production of cars increased considerably.

Challenges for the Mexican Industry

Mexico is the 4th largest producer of auto parts worldwide and the main supplier to the United States. It is also the 7th largest producer of light vehicles. However, the Mexican industry is going through various challenges for its continuity and permanence.

Some of the challenges are related to the supply and availability of products, linked to the shortage of semiconductors and spare parts. Additionally, there are various situations in the supply chain connected to the arrival of ships, logistics costs, port saturation and the inflation of vehicle costs. That's why it's important to have a logistics partner to help you keep your supply chain moving.

Production and Export

The production of light vehicles reported 239 536 units in December 2022, which is an increase of 4.4% compared to December 2021. From January to December 2022, 3 308 346 vehicles were produced, which is an increase of 9.2% compared to 2021.

In addition to this vehicle production, during December 2022, a total of 243 344 light vehicles were exported, which is an increase of 7% compared to the 227 465 units exported in December 2021.

Furthermore, from January to December 2022, exports of light vehicles totaled 2 865 641 units.

The Contribution of Mexican Ports

Mexican ports play an important role for international vehicle trade, and in 2022, they accumulated a total of 1 704 518 car movements, of which 1 027 370 units were exported while 677 148 were imported by sea.

The participation that the ports had in terms of the transfer of automobiles was as follows:

  1. Veracruz 793 948
  2. Lázaro Cárdenas 590 423
  3. Altamira 305 970
  4. Mazatlán 9871
  5. Manzanillo 4306
