Hurricane Helene – Potential Transportation Disruptions
Hurricane Helene in the Gulf of Mexico is expected to intensify into a major Category 4 storm with winds upwards of 125 mph as it makes landfall in Florida’s West Coast/panhandle tonight.
The storm will continue to track north into Georgia and remain a Category 1 hurricane through the Atlanta metro and eventually dissipate into a tropical storm as it enters South Carolina and Tennessee.
Impacts to ocean ports, airports and roadways are expected. The Port of Tampa Bay closed operations late Wednesday, September 25th, 2024, in anticipation of the storm. Georgia Port Authority has issued a notice for Friday, September 27th, 2024, that gate hours will delay opening by 2 hours.
Airlines have also issued travel advisories for many airports in Florida and Georgia beginning today continuing through the weekend.
Additionally, trucking companies are announcing terminal closures in Northwest and Central Florida, Southern and Central Georgia as more delays/closures expected throughout this afternoon and evening.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provide pertinent updates accordingly.
