Hurricane Milton – Potential Transportation Disruptions
Hurricane Milton in the Gulf of Mexico is now a major Category 5 storm with winds upwards of 170 mph. Milton is tracking westward toward Florida’s Gulf Coast where it is expected to make landfall as a strong Category 3 hurricane late Wednesday, October 9th, 2024, near Tampa, FL. Mandatory evacuations are underway along areas that the storm is expected to hit.
Impacts to Airports and Ocean Ports Are Expected
Tampa International Airport has suspended operations beginning at 9am on Tuesday, October 8th, 2024, and will remain closed to the public "until it can assess any damage after the storm," airport officials say. The Orlando International Airport will close Wednesday morning on October 9th, 2024, to commercial operations and reopen as soon as it is safe.
On Sunday, October 6th, 2024, Port Tampa Bay said that it was monitoring the storm and working with local and state partners. The port has initiated its weather advisory group to monitor impacts to the port and its waterways. The storm will have a moderate impact on supply chain hubs in Miami and Jacksonville, Florida and Savannah, Georgia.
