New Remissions for Canadian Businesses Affected by US Tariffs

On 15 April 2025, the Department of Finance Canada announced new remissions for some Canadian businesses and entities affected by the recent tariffs imposed by the United States. 

New Remissions – Key Information 

Importers of motor vehicles from the US 

The Government of Canada is granting remission of the 25% surtax to certain importers of motor vehicles from the US, under specific conditions 

The framework for obtaining remission is outlined in the United States Surtax Remission Order (Motor Vehicles 2025) (Motor Vehicle Remission Order).  

The CBSA has issued customs notice CN 25-17 to provide guidelines on Motor Vehicles remission order United States Surtax Remission Order (Motor Vehicles 2025). 

Importers of US-origin goods 

The Government of Canada is also granting a temporary six-month relief period from the surtaxes paid or payable on US-origin goods, including:  

  • Goods used in Canadian manufacturing, processing, and food and beverage packaging  
  • Goods used to support public health, health care, public safety, national security objectives 

The framework for obtaining relief is outlined in the United States Surtax Remission Order (2025) (Surtax Remission Order). 

The CBSA issued customs notice CN 25-19 to provide information on the application of the United States Surtax Remission Order (2025).
