US Tariffs

The US government has announced it is delaying a previously announced 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican products that went into effect on March 4th, 2025.

  1. Delayed tariffs for products that qualify under the United States-Mexico-Canada (free trade) Agreement (USMCA) and entered on or after March 7th, 2025.
  2. Reduced the tariff on Canadian potash imports to 10%.
  3. Non-qualifying USMCA products from Canada or Mexico continue to be subject to applicable general rates of duty plus the US 25% tariff.
  4. Tariffs on Chinese products remain unless processed under the US Section 321 “De Minimis” program. The US Department of Commerce (DOC) is expected to confirm a future date when Chinese-origin products will not be allowed entry under the US Section 321 “De Minimis” program.
  5. US steel and aluminum tariffs, beginning March 12th, 2025, remain unchanged. These tariffs will be assessed on applicable primary products regardless of country of origin. Derivative steel and aluminum product tariffs will be assessed at a later date (subject to confirmation by the DOC).

Canada Tariffs

  1. Postponed its second list of US products targeted for retaliatory tariffs on March 25th, 2025.
  2. Retaliatory tariffs remain in effect on its first list of US products implemented on March 4th, 2025.

Mexico Tariffs

  1. Has not yet announced detailed retaliatory import tariffs on US products.

China Tariffs

  1. Announced retaliatory tariffs on both the US and Canadian products based on corresponding increases in tariffs by those two countries.

Importers are reminded that such rapid trade developments are further subject to customs and service provider system updates. In some cases, assessed tariffs may remain payable at the time of import and require post-entry claims to be refunded (subject to related government instructions).
