Surtax on Select Wood Cabinet and Vanity Imports into Canada – Effective July 31, 2026

Overview 

The Government of Canada has been reviewing whether a surge in imported wood products is impacting Canadian manufacturers. While that investigation is underway, the federal government has introduced a temporary protective measure to support domestic cabinets and vanity producers.  

Effective July 31, 2026, Canada has imposed a 25% surtax on certain imported wood cabinets, bathroom vanities and related components for up to 200 days.  

Affected Products 

The measure is temporary while the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) decides whether longer-term safeguards are needed. 

The surtax applies to: 

• Wood kitchen cabinets 

• Wood bathroom vanities 

• Cabinet components and subassemblies such as doors, drawers, frames, cabinet boxes, panels, and attached shelving intended for permanent installation.  
  
  

What Importers Need to Know 

• Imports of covered products may now face an additional 25% duty cost. 

• Importers need to verify product classifications and country of origin. 

• Supply chains sourcing cabinets or vanity products from affected countries could see higher landed costs 

Please note that products originating from the United States, Mexico, Chile, Israel, and certain developing countries are excluded from this temporary surtax.
