Tropical Storm Debby Impact to East Coast Region – Update
Further to yesterday’s notice, Tropical Storm Debby continued to crawl up the eastern coast on Tuesday, August 6th, 2024.
The slow-moving storm has caused major flooding, especially in South Carolina, where reports from the National Weather Service have recorded more than a foot of rain in some areas. Charleston Mayor William Cogswell extended the city-wide curfew, which began Monday, August 5th, 2024, at 11:00pm. It was lifted this morning on August 7th, 2024.
Ground, Rail and Port Announcements
Ground
Terminals in Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC are open today, August 7th, 2024, but service is limited due to flooding and storm damage. Other terminals near and along Debby's path in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic may be limiting services.
Intermodal
CSX advised their customers to expect minor delays to traffic originating and terminating in the Southeast region as the CSX team monitors the storm conditions. All intermodal terminals are maintaining normal gate hours and lift operations, and their team is actively monitoring tracks, signals and crossings.
Ports – Georgia and South Carolina
- The Georgia Port Authority issued an update advising that vessel traffic in Savannah and Brunswick has not resumed. The U.S. Coast Guard is conducting waterway inspections and offshore wind analysis before reopening the port. Terminals reopened today, August 7th, 2024, beginning with Garden City terminal at 6:00am, followed by Ocean Terminal at 8:00am.
- The South Carolina Ports Authority will operate reduced gate hours in Charleston and Dillion today, August 7th, 2024. Inland Port Greer will operate under normal hours.
